Our origins
Achina, also called Achina Idegwu, was settled by people of Nri stock led by the brothers Ebele, Eleke and Ezeiyi, joined by a group from Ibu in Okigwe. The groups came together at Ohia Ezekoro and formed a union for their common defence, Onu-ogu-na-ato.
The land
Achina sits on a broad plateau in Aguata, bounded by Akpo and Amesi to the west, Umuchu and Enugwu Umuonyia to the east, and Agbudu, Oneh and Ogboji to the north. Fertile soil, forest and streams made it a farming town, and the Ezekoro stream is its pride. The 2006 census counted 34,822 people.
A market town
For centuries Achina held big markets that drew traders from across the Aguata district.
Eze Idegwu
The traditional ruler of Achina carries the title Eze Idegwu. HRM Igwe Godwin Nnaemeka Obiora, Eze Idegwu III, was crowned on 29 December 2010 and leads the Achina Council of Chiefs.
Idegwu Day
Achina's great festival falls on 31 December, with the Idegwu Summit, the youth council's beauty pageant and football, and the return of sons and daughters from home and abroad.
Ofala of Eze Idegwu III
The royal Ofala festival is held at the Achina recreational ground around the end of December.
Age grades
Each new age grade completes a development project for the town before its official outing, held on 27 December.
Our written history
Nweke Ifeanyi Green's book "Achina Idegwu: The Mirror of Ages" was published on 27 December 2012, and "Achina Idegwu, the Eastern Citadel" was launched at the Idegwu Summit in 2024.
